Arlene’s Riso Recipes

This project was dedicated to my great-grandmother, Arlene. Before the world-wide quarantine, I was given her famous recipe tin. outside of design, I find joy in baking and spending time with my big extended family. Once the opportunity to explore her collection of recipes presented itself during the pandemic, I tried and tested many of her favorite desserts. This publication is a stack of 4 inch by 6 inch cards printed on French Paper using the Risograph.

This was my first time using the Risograph, so I learned how to color separate files and work with a more manual format of printing.

The process looked like…

I began with going through her old recipe cards, then I was having trouble narrowing down which recipes to add to the publication. So I reached out to all of my aunts and uncles asking which of her recipes were their favorites. Then from there I was able to narrow them down and I began hand sketching with a marker. I sketched ingredients, page numbers, quotes, and annotations. The annotations stemmed from my own thoughts about the recipes.
